Privacy Policy
Effective EFFECTIVE_DATE
ReelMath is a math-practice app for children, set up by a parent. We built it so that we collect nothing about your child. This policy explains what the app stores, where it is stored, and what the services it uses can see.
The short version
- No accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking.
- Your child's progress stays on your device. We never receive it.
- Spoken answers are turned into numbers on the device and are never recorded or stored.
- Videos are played by YouTube's own player, from channels you choose.
What the app stores on your device
For each child profile: the name or nickname you type, which math facts were asked, the answers given, how long each answer took, and when the app was used. The app uses this to choose the next questions and to show you progress in the parent area. The parent PIN is stored on the device too.
This data stays on the device. It is included in your device's own iCloud or computer backup if you have backups turned on, under your Apple account and Apple's privacy policy. We cannot see it.
Usage records older than LOG_RETENTION_DAYS days are deleted automatically. Deleting the app deletes all of its data.
Microphone and speech
Children can say their answers out loud. The microphone is on unless a parent turns it off. The app uses Apple's speech recognition on the device to turn speech into numbers. Audio is not recorded, not stored, and not sent to us or to Apple. A parent can turn it off at any time in the parent area, or in the device's Settings.
Videos and YouTube
ReelMath plays videos from YouTube channels a parent approves. Videos are shown in YouTube's official embedded player and are subject to the YouTube Terms of Service. By using ReelMath, you agree to be bound by them.
When a video plays, and when video thumbnails are shown, the device connects directly to YouTube, which receives information such as the device's IP address and which video is being shown. ReelMath only plays videos that YouTube has marked "Made for Kids". YouTube limits data collection for those videos and does not show them with personalized ads. YouTube's handling of this data is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
To list the videos from your approved channels, the app asks our server, which forwards the request to the YouTube Data API. The request contains only the channel or video IDs. It contains no information about your child or device. The server keeps no logs, and it caches channel listings for up to 30 days to save quota. ReelMath uses YouTube API Services.
Nearby races
Two devices near each other can race. They connect directly over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, without the internet. While a race is being set up, the child's profile name is visible to nearby devices running ReelMath. During the race, the name and score are sent to the other device, which keeps the opponent's name in its own on-device usage records. Nothing about a race is sent to us.
Children's privacy
ReelMath is designed for children under 13 and their parents. We do not collect personal information from children, as defined by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If that ever changes, we will update this policy and ask for a parent's consent first.
Parents can review their child's progress in the parent area at any time, and can delete all of it by deleting the app.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will post the new version here and update the date above. For a change to what the app collects, we will also tell you in the app first.
